I have worked as an activist for most of my adult life. Along the way, I have learnt some important things about what social movements need to succeed. Of those lessons, two really stand out.
The first was working with some incredible women, who showed me the power and necessity of women’s leadership in all social movements.
The second was the importance of taking leadership from those who are most affected by the systems that perpetuate injustice.
These were the lessons that made me jump at the chance to work with ActionAid Australia. Our commitment to stand in solidarity with women fighting for justice around the world, and to take our leadership from them, is transformative.
Today, it is more important than ever to stand in solidarity with women fighting against inequality and injustice. The impacts of climate change are already being felt around the world, corporations are becoming more and more powerful, governments are privatising basic services, the gap between the rich and the poor is increasing, and male violence against women is still everywhere.
Here in Australia, government policies and corporate practices are blatantly perpetuating injustices faced by the women ActionAid is working with, in communities around the world.
But there is hope. Women all around the globe are leading social movements to challenge these injustices. That’s why in 2017, we are building a grassroots network of Australians to stand in solidarity with these women, and to work together to hold our government and corporations to account.
I would love it if you joined our movement. Sign the pledge and take action for women’s rights in 2017 today. I’ll see you there!
Join a global movement of people working together to further human rights and defeat poverty for all.
